Since being elected to the Bédar Town Council in May, we
have been considering our position and looking at how we can best serve the
town of Bédar
and those constituents who voted us in.
As the minority party, with three votes against the six of the PSOE
ruling party, there isn’t much we can do to influence the mayor’s plans. Nevertheless, we believe it is our duty to
continually ask questions of the ruling party, to examine their policies and
decisions, and to attempt to ensure maximum transparency in the governing
process.
The plenary meetings are the most visible public arena of the town council. Ordinary meetings are held on the final Wednesday of each quarter and extraordinary meetings can be called at any time. The councillors receive the meeting Agenda several days before the plenary meeting and are then allowed to look at relevant documents in the town hall. The Opposition team also meets in advance of the plenary to discuss how the Opposition stands on each matter to be voted on.
We will share this process with you on the blog. We will
post the agenda and then we will report back on what happened during the meeting. The actual Minutes for each meeting are only
available in the run-up to the following plenary session. We also encourage everybody to attend the plenaries to see how things
operate and to show the Mayor that we care.
Over time, we hope that our regular Blog entries will generate
discussion and foment citizen participation.

This blog should be a place where we can pass on information, provide articles related to the development of Bédar and encourage discussion about the policies proposed or implemented by the Council. We will be telling you about the efforts we make to obtain information. We will let you know both what our views are, as well as the views of those who disagree with us. We believe in transparency and participation. We want as many people as possible to see what is going on and to be part of the conversation.
We put ourselves forward as councillors because we are
passionate about the untapped potential of Bédar and we think more could be done. We have found it difficult to get
information. We hope, with your help, to
change that. We hope this blog will be a
record of our efforts as an effective Opposition.
It is important that we take a constant interest in the policies
of Bédar and not just at election time.
